D23 Expo Update: Disney+ Streaming Service Debuts Along with Trailers, Previews, and Posters of Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel Series and Movies

D23 Expo attendees were treated to a first-look at the Disney+ streaming service platform today. In addition, a first look at many of the streaming service’s shows, movies, and series were showcased in the Disney+ Pavilion.

Yvette Nicole Brown, the star of Disney+‘s upcoming live-action Lady and the Tramp and Disney Channel’s Elena of Avalor, hosted the Disney+ Showcase. Here’s what we learned during the session.

Debut of Disney+ App and Interface

The showcase and Disney+ Pavilion were the first places the Disney+ app and interface have been previewed. At launch, the app will be available on Apple, Google, Microsoft, Roku, and Sony devices.

First Look: Disney+ Live Action Lady and the Tramp

A preview for a live-action version of the animated classic Lady and the Tramp made its debut today. In the first look, we get to see the film come to life with its stars, two rescue dogs voiced by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux. We hear Tramp promise Lady that “every day could be an adventure”. In addition to the special preview, the Disney+ pavilion has some of the costumes and props on display from the movie — including Lady’s dog house!

Lady and the Tramp is scheduled to be released on November 12 with the debut of Disney+.

First Look: The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian will be Star Wars’ first live action series. The series is set after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and tells the tale of a Mandalorian who explores the world after the fall of the Empire, and before the rise of the First Order. The series will follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. Earlier in the day at the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony, it was announced that new Disney Legend Ming-Na Wen will join the cast of the series.

Executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni  and stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and Giancarlo Esposito, along with Taika Waititi, who brings the droid IG-11 to life, presented the trailer for series. Watch the trailer here:

The Mandalorian is scheduled to be released with an eight-episode first season on November 12 with the debut of Disney+.

Two New Star Wars Live-Action Series

A surprise Star Wars announcement was the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi to a new untitled series!

Stars Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk joined Kathleen Kennedy to introduce the audience to the second Lucasfilm live-action series for Disney+, which is now in development. Both actors are reprising their roles from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the stories follow Cassian Andor’s adventures as a rebel spy during the formative years of the Rebellion, before the events of A New Hope.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Returns

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will premiere its next 12-episode season on Disney+ in February 2020. Fans can expect the return of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and fan-favorites Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

The cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series gave a live performance of the multi-platinum hit song, We’re All In This Together. The series is set at the real-life East High, where the original movie was filmed, and follows a group of students as they countdown to opening night of their school’s first-ever production of High School Musical.

Cast members Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Julia Lester, Larry Saperstein, Dara Reneé, Frankie A. Rodriguez, Kate Reinders, Mark St. Cyr, and Showrunner Tim Federle revealed the 10-episode series’ trailer.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is scheduled to be released on November 12 with the debut of Disney+.

Lizzie McGuire is Back!

Not only is Lizzie back, but Hilary Duff is back as Lizzie McGuire in the new Disney+ series! The series will follow a 30-something Lizzie as she learns to manage life in New York City while still having an animated 13 year old version of herself in her head.

Encore!

A new series executive produced by Kristen Bell brings together former castmates of a high school musical, tasking them with re-creating their original performance in a high school reunion like no other. Watch to see if these re-united groups can pull off an encore performance of musicals such as The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, Annie, and more. Encore! is scheduled to be released on November 12 with the debut of Disney+. Check out the trailer here:

Marvel Studios to Debut Several Series

Marvel announced three new series in addition to their previously announced Phase 4 series coming to the service. The new series are Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She Hulk.

We also learned a little more about previously announced, Phase 4 series coming to Disney+. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will find the Falcon and the Winter Soldier teaming up after Avengers: Endgame. Emily VanCamp will reprise her role as Sharon Carter. Wyatt Russell will play John Walker—a character from the comics coming to the screen for the first time. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will launch on Disney+ in 2020.

In WandaVision stars Paul Bettany, as Vision, and Elizabeth Olsen, as Wanda Maximoff, are two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives who begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. Kat Dennings and Randall Park who will reprise their roles from Thor and Ant-Man and The Wasp, and Kathryn Hahn who has been cast as a new character in the series. Director Matt Shakman and head writer Jac Schaeffer revealed that the streaming series will blend the style of classic sitcoms with Marvel Cinematic Universe. WandaVision premieres on Disney+ in 2021.

For Marvel Studios’ What If…? Hayley Atwell will voice Peggy Carter in Marvel Studios’ first animated series that focuses on different heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and imagines what would happen if the events in the films worked out differently. What If…? premieres on Disney+ in 2021.

Sticking with the Marvel theme, Avengers: Endgame will be available on Disney+ on December 11.

Muppets Shorts Coming to Disney+

Well, with a release like the one below, we don’t have a lot to share on this new series….except it will be unscripted and called Muppets Now. Look for this new series in 2020.

Additional Disney+ Series and Movie Poster News and Releases

During the day, news and posters were released for other series and movies debuting on the streaming service. The poster was released for The World According to Jeff Goldblum. The documentary-style series will feature Jeff diving deep into everyday items and revealing the science behind them. The World According to Jeff Goldblum is scheduled to be released on November 12 with the debut of Disney+. Check out the trailer here:

We also learned about a new movie coming out this holiday starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader titled Noelle.  Noelle is Santa’s daughter and loves Christmas, but she wishes she could do something “important” like her brother Nick, who will take over from their father this Christmas. But Nick can’t take the pressure — causing Noelle to suggest he take a break and get away. When he doesn’t return, Noelle must find her brother and bring him back in time to save Christmas. Noelle is scheduled to be released on November 12 with the debut of Disney+. Watch the Noelle trailer here:

The original Phineas and Ferb movie now has a full title: Phineas and Ferb The Movie Candace Against the Universe. We will get to see Phineas and Ferb team up to rescue their sister, Candace, from a brother-free planet. The movie is currently in production.

Toy Story 4‘s Forky gets his own series, and he looks like he is preparing already. Find out what is on Forky’s mind (like “what is money”) in Forky Asks a Question when it premieres on Disney+. Forky Asks a Question is scheduled to be released on November 12 with the debut of Disney+.

A highlight of the pre-Expo news was the release of a new book, documentary, and docu-series titled One Day in Disney. Learn more about and watch the trailer for One Day in Disney here.

Programming Launching After November 12

The Disney+ original film Togo will tell an untold true story set in the winter of 1925 across the terrain of the Alaskan tundra. An exhilarating and uplifting adventure, Togo stars four-time Oscar® nominee Willem Dafoe and is directed by Ericson Core. The film also stars Julianne Nicholson, Christopher Heyerdahl, Richard Dormer, Michael Greyeyes, Michael McElhatton, and Michael Gaston. Togo will launch on Disney+ in December.

Executive Producer and recurring guest star Gina Rodriguez joined Diary of a Female President lead Tess Romero to announce the series will premiere on Disney+ in January. Told using the narration from her diary, this half-hour single camera comedy follows 12-year-old Cuban-American girl Elena’s journey through the trials of middle school, which set her on the path to ultimately become president of the United States.

Sean Bailey shared a first look at the original film Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Tom McCarthy with screenplay by McCarthy & Stephan Pastis and based on the best-selling book series by Pastis. The film follows the hilarious exploits of our quirky, deadpan hero, Timmy Failure, who, along with his 1,500-pound polar bear partner Total, operates Total Failure Inc., a Portland detective agency. Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made will launch on Disney+ in early 2020.

The stars of Stargirl, Grace VanderWaal and Graham Verchere, introduced the coming-of-age film based on the critically-acclaimed, New York Times’ best-selling young adult novel.  The film also stars Karan Brar, Maximiliano Hernandez, Darby Stanchfield and Giancarlo Esposito. Stargirl will launch on Disney+ in early 2020.

Monsters At Work stars Ben Feldman and Aisha Tyler unveiled the latest design of their characters Tylor and Millie. Inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Academy Award®-winning feature film Monsters, Inc., the new series from Disney Television Animation returns to Monstropolis and follows a new cast of monsters with special appearances from Mike and Sulley (voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman).
