Here are some things the US Embassy thinks you should consider before traveling to Mexico:

  • Crime — Violent crime can occur anywhere in Mexico, including popular tourist destinations. You should exercise increased caution in downtown areas of popular tourist destinations like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark.
  • Drugs — Drug possession and drug use, including medical marijuana, is illegal in Mexico.
  • Unregulated alcohol — Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and US citizens have been reported injured or have become unconscious after consuming tainted alcohol.
  • Pharmaceuticals — Counterfeit medication is common in Mexico.
  • Sexual Assault — US citizens have been victims of sexual assault while on vacation. Perpetrators may target isolated individuals or use drugs.
  • Drowning — Some beaches have strong currents and riptides.
  • Medical Emergencies — Private hospital charges in Mexico can be higher than those in the United States.
  • Guns and Ammunition — All guns and ammunition are illegal in Mexico. Possession could result in jail time.
