An ‘Avatar’ Land Could Be Part of Disney’s NEW $1.9 Billion Expansion Project

It’s no secret that Pandora: The World of Avatar is one of the most popular parts of Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. This land is full of interesting food options, unique Imagineering details, and some of our favorite rides in Disney World.

There are some Disney lands, like Galaxy’s Edge, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland, that you can find on both U.S. coasts. Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World share quite a few rides, shows, and general theming. But — at least, currently — one of Disney World’s most popular destinations is only located in Animal Kingdom. Could that change?

On March 4th, Disney CEO Bob Iger attended the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. During the event, Iger dropped some big announcements and made some lofty commitments. In fact, he wants to make “big bets” that involve seven new theme park lands and huge expansion plans.

As part of Iger’s (rough, unofficial) game plan, he touched on a new Avatar-based land like the one at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Iger said,  “We have one Avatar-based land, Pandora, in Florida; we’re going to put a second one in California. That doesn’t mean we can’t put one somewhere in Asia or somewhere in Europe, for instance,” per Scott Gustin.

Keep in mind that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Iger mention a new Avatar theme park addition. Iger made a comment during the Q1 2023 earnings call that got our attention. He said, “I’m thrilled to announce that we will be bringing an exciting Avatar experience to Disneyland. We’ll be sharing more details on that very soon.”

Since then, we haven’t heard any major updates, other than a more official confirmation in May 2023, when we learned that Walt Disney Imagineering was teaming up with James Cameron to bring a “bold” new Avatar experience to Disneyland. But Disney has yet to share any concrete updates.

Did Disney Just Give Us a CLUE About the NEW ‘Avatar’ Attraction?

That said, many are speculating that this new Avatar experience may become a part of Disney’s $1.9 billion investment in DisneylandForward, a proposal that outlines how Disney could update and renovate Disneyland Resort under new guidelines. Disney hopes to add new restaurants, shops, and even attractions to a 490-acre area within Disneyland Resort. The project is still in its early stages and needs to be approved by the Anaheim City Council; a vote is set for May.

If all goes according to plan, we may see a Coco land, or even a FrozenZootopiaPeter PanTron, Toy Story, or Tangled land!
