ALL the Disney Movie News You Missed Last Week

A ton of Disney news just dropped at one of the year’s biggest film conventions. 

CinemaCon — known as ShoWest before 2011 — has been one of the biggest entertainment conventions of the year for decades. The event, staged by the National Association of Theatre Owners, is held in Las Vegas and sees studios elaborately showing off their upcoming slate for the upcoming year and beyond. This year, Disney certainly brought the goods to their presentation.

Marvel Studios 

Let’s begin with the Marvel Studios portion of the presentation. It’s no secret that the last year was not the most prosperous in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with most of its releases being critically maligned, and The Marvels bringing in the lowest box office total in the franchise’s history. Therefore, it was important for Marvel and studio president Kevin Feige to make a bit of a splash at CinemaCon, and they seem to have done so. 

First off, the studio showed 9 minutes of footage from the highly anticipated upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine. The third film in the Deadpool series will mark its first Disney-produced installment. However, if the footage is to be believed, the film is going to retain the R-rated over-the-top nature of the series, including jokes about drugs, and the irony that this type of film is being produced by the generally “family-friendly” Disney. 

In fact, at one point in the footage, Ryan Reynolds Deadpool delivers the line “Suck it, Fox. We’re going to Disneyland!” Deadpool & Wolverine stars Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the title characters, and is scheduled for release on July 26, 2024.

Marvel also showed off footage from next year’s Captain America: Brave New World. The film stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson – the former Falcon who took over the mantle of the Sentinel of Liberty during the Disney+ series Falcon & The Winter Soldier – and Harrison Ford taking over the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross from the late William Hurt. 

According to those in attendance, the footage involved an action sequence, as well as dialogue between Wilson and Ross where the latter asks the former to reform the Avengers. The film is set to be released on February 14th, 2025.

During the presentation, Feige also spoke about the upcoming film Thunderbolts*, which stars Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Harrison Ford, and Lewis Pullman. Feige confirmed the film’s title officially included the asterisk, which has led to a slew of online discussion about what that could mean, with theories ranging from the film’s title actually being “Dark Avengers” to it being a reference to a comic storyline that revealed the team’s duplicitous nature. The film is scheduled for release on May 2nd, 2025. 

Pixar

Star Amy Poehler introduced 35 minutes of footage from Pixar’s upcoming sequel, Inside Out 2, which is scheduled for release on June 14, 2024. 

The film features the characters from the first installment  – Joy (Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Fear (Tony Hale, replacing Bill Hader) fighting new emotions Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edeberi), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) over control of now-teenager Riley Andersen (Kensington Tallman, replacing Kaitlyn Dias). 

Disney

Perhaps the most showstopping moment of the Disney presentation came when Dwayne Johnson appeared to discuss the upcoming Moana 2. After taking part in a dance presentation, Johnson spoke about his personal connection to the franchise, before showing a sizzle reel of footage from the film, which is scheduled to be released on November 27, 2024. 

Director Barry Jenkins then showed the first footage from his upcoming Lion King prequel, which focuses on Mufasa. According to Jenkins, the film will see “Mufasa, Scar, and others going on a journey throughout Africa. Mufasa: The Lion King is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024. 

Other Live Action Films

Disney showed footage from other live-action films including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (the first film in the long-running sci-fi series to be released by Disney on May 8, 2024), Young Woman and the Sea (a drama about an Olympic swimmer who completed a 21-mile swim from France to England through the English Channel starring Daisy Ridley, which is scheduled to be released on May 8, 2024), Alien Romulus (another installment of a long-running sci-fi film series acquired from 20th Century Fox set to be released on August 16, 2024), and The Amateur (a film about a CIA cryptographer starring Rami Malek scheduled to be released April 11, 2025). 

Disney’s CinemaCon 2024 presentation laid the groundwork for the upcoming blockbuster year of Disney, Marvel, and Pixar films. Stay tuned to AllEars for more coverage of these releases.
