It’s Earth Day and Disney World is celebrating!
While Disney has been offering up a whole bunch of new eats and drinks for the month of April, there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes. And, you may not notice all of the innovative ways that Disney is making the parks more sustainable, but it makes a big impact on your vacation!
For many years now, Disney has been harnessing the power of solar energy to power a significant portion of park operations around the globe. And, there’s only more to come!
Over in Walt Disney World, Disney is planning to add to the already substantial solar panel fields. Two more fields are expected to be built in the next two years.
Disneyland Resort also has some solar panels to provide power to the attractions, but they are a little more hidden. When you’re racing down Radiator Springs in Cars Land, you’re actually pretty close to the “solar field” which is stationed on top of the ride!
And, for those who love cruising, Disney will be adding even more solar panels to their private island, Castaway Cay, to eventually provide power to roughly 70% of the operations on the island.
Plus, Disney’s efforts even expand into their international parks. Disney will be installing solar canopies that will double as a parking lot in Disneyland Paris — an added bonus will be that you get to park your car under the canopy to protect it from the sun.
Over in Hong Kong Disneyland, the solar panel field that Disney has installed there is actually the largest in Hong Kong.
And, eight solar panel locations actually provide all of the power to the Tokyo Disney Resort Dreamlights Parade that has become a fan-favorite in the park.
Disney’s long-term goal is to reach net-zero emissions for their operations by 2030 and these solar fields put them well on their way to achieving it!
