Don’t Buy a Disney World Annual Pass Without Knowing THIS Rule

Exciting news has been shared about Annual Pass sales at Disney World!

New Annual Passholder Cards

Beginning April 20th, 2023, NEW Annual Pass sales will begin (and current Passholders will be able to renew their Pass outside of their allotted renewal window by paying their difference in full). This is BIG news, as Disney hasn’t accepted new Annual Passholders for a while with the exception of the Pixie Pass which is for Florida residents only. But before you buy a new Annual Pass, there’s an important rule you need to know about.

You might be wondering whether or not it makes sense to purchase an Annual Pass this year, especially if you aren’t able to visit Disney World until the end of the year or until early 2024. This is when an important detail comes into play! Your Annual Pass doesn’t activate until your FIRST trip to the parks.

Will you be purchasing an Annual Pass?

To explain it more clearly, imagine you buy the Annual Pass on April 20th, 2023. But your next trip to Disney World is planned for January 2024. You can wait to activate your Pass until your January 2024 trip, and then your Annual Pass will be eligible until January 2025. As long as you activate your Pass within 365 days of purchase, the clock won’t start tickin’ on your Pass eligibility until that first trip to the parks.

Passholder Entrance

Disney’s specific language (in the Annual Passholder terms and conditions) says: “For a new Pass purchase (not a renewal), a Pass is valid for applicable privileges for one (1) year from the date of use of the Pass for first entry into a Walt Disney World® Resort theme park…A Pass will expire if it is not activated within one (1) year from the date of purchase, and upon expiration, such expired Pass may no longer be activated or have park reservations scheduled for it, and any existing park reservations for such Pass will be cancelled.”

Even if you don’t have a current trip planned, utilizing this trick can ensure that you grab an Annual Pass before they sell out. We imagine could sell pretty fast, and Disney has already said that the number of passes that will be available will be limited and some passes or pass types might become UNAVAILABLE at certain times (so you’ll want to grab your pass sooner rather than later).

  1. Help! I’m a college student that loves Disney and doesn’t live in FL (so I would have to get the incredi-pass) and don’t have any current trips planned but could potentially make one. My biggest fear is them selling out and not be able to get one for years again!! Any advice on what I should do?

    1. Hi Jazmyn! If you’re planning on going and the Incredi-pass is within your budget, keep in mind that it won’t expire until a year after you use it (within reason, of course) so if you buy one on April 20th, but can’t visit the parks until January 2024, your pass won’t expire until January 2025, a full year after you used it.

  2. So I just bought the pixie pass in March. If I would have know they were going to open up the rest I would have waited. I am not sure what it means by pay the difference if I upgrade if I am on a monthly payment plan. I would really like a Sorcerer pass. Can anyone help with explaining this? Thank you!
